SMS Vs Email - The Moot Point

The comparison between SMS and e-mail has always been an issue of debate in all the technological forums around the world. And this debate is not unforeseen. It had to happen, as when two equally powerful technologies namely computers and mobile phones are standing face to face with each other. The trend peacefully coexisted for quite a while and both the techniques of communications are still very much popular in their own respective niche markets. And each medium has its own similarities and weaknesses that compensate the drawbacks of each other.

The comparison arrived with the convergence of these devices where computers started serving the function of calling and the mobile phones started working like computers. Then started the competition between both mediums. While we analyse both mediums, it should be understood that both are equally relevant in their own regards and they cannot replace each other. SMS is a short message that is a more informal method of staying in touch and yet it is more accessible in comparison to an e-mail. This is a genuine sentiment amongst all of us that an e-mail is generally used by all the white collared executives to communicate in a more dignified way. On the other hand the SMS is used in a very informal fashion by the blue collared people. Never mind these constructions; they can not be 100% applicable in both the cases.

There started a better and more innovative version of the SMS, namely MMS, that had more to do with the videos and clips but the concept couldn't pick up in the mass market and was termed as a big flop. And to an extent it is a failure. However, the drawback of SMS is that you have a limited word limit

(160 words) and you are charged money for sending an SMS. However, on the other hand, the e-mail has always been free of cost and is more economical and without any word limit. So, you could write as long as you can while using your e-mails.

But SMS is more efficient than the E-mails as it would work everywhere and you could check your SMS even while you are outside. With the advent of the blackberry connectivity and various e-mail protocols in a mobile phone, checking your e-mails is possible through a mobile phone also but again the cost factor abstain us in doing so.

Thus, both these mediums have retained their hold on their respective markets and thus despite all the comparisons, it seems that the both ways are inevitable and can't take each other's place.

iPhone Flunks Out at Duke University

Well it wasn't AT&T's west coast network, but the iPhone did manage to short circuit one, albeit much smaller, network today. The iPhone's Wi-Fi connection appears to be causing problems on the wireless network at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

The built-in 802.11b/g adapters on a number of phones occasionally flood certain parts of the University's wireless LAN with MAC address requests. This has lead to the temporary loss of signal from 12 to 30 wireless access points on different occasions.

The campus primary WLAN provider, Cisco, is currently working with network administrators who have opened a help desk ticket with Apple. However, a specific cause has yet to be determined.

Because it is summer, a time in which the majority of full-time students are not enrolled in classes, the problem is not as severe as say during finals week of fall semester. However, when students return for classes in the fall, they are certain to bring more iPhones with them. And with more iPhones, come even more network requests flooding the campus system.

The iPhones appear to be flooding the University's access points with up to 18,000 address requests per second (nearly 10Mbps of bandwidth) and hording the campus airtime. When the access points can no longer handle the intense traffic, they proceed to shut down for 10-15 minutes with no means to communicate with Wi-Fi enabled devices. According to Kevin Miller, assistant director, communications infrastructure, with Duke's Office of Information Technology, there are currently 150 or so Apple iPhones regularly using Duke's Wi-Fi network.

The iPhone uses the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) to request the MAC address of the destination node, for which it already has the IP address. When it doesn't get an answer, the iPhone just keeps asking, leading to the aforementioned 18,000 requests per second.

So far, the communication with Apple has been "one-way," according to Miller. After initially filing the problem ticket, Apple has told him the problem is being "escalated" but as of mid-afternoon Monday, nothing significant had been heard from Apple.

With this story in full rotation in the blogoshpere and national news publications, Apple would be wise to offer some real solutions to the problems, and fast. With an angry consumer rights group and an irritated mob of EDGE customers already barking up their proverbial tree, this is just one more bump in the road the iPhone must cope with and resolve.

The coming days may prove costly for Apple as they could see their college-age market shrink due to potential perceived complications with campus wireless networks. Regardless of whether the Duke case is an isolated incident, the negative press from its occurrence is sure to leave some college-aged purchasers with a bitter taste in their mouth.

Facts You Should Know about Cleaning Your Laptop

Like any maintenance procedure with a laptop, it's best to learn what the recommended procedure is before you undertake cleaning your unit. If you're a frequent traveler, you may want to clean your laptop more than once a year. Most manufacturers recommend an annual cleaning only. Don't use any harsh cleaning agents or those which contain ammonia on any part of your expensive piece of equipment.

You're going to find all kinds of goodies that build up on the inside of your laptop including pet hair and dander, cigarette ashes, crumbs and dust. The dirt will mar your display and affect the performance of your fans, and block or cause other problems with your I/O ports. You're going to need a few basic tools to undertake a cleaning. To start with, go into your local computer supply store and get a can of compressed air. Find yourself some cotton swabs, cleaning solution and a soft cleaning cloth like from a cotton T-shirt. On the exterior, also use the soft, damp cloth for cleaning. Be careful to not use a scratchy or abrasive cleaning cloth. Refrain from using harsh cleaning products and never spray any cleaning solution directly into the casing, always spray it onto the cloth first.

One of the most critical parts of your laptop, obviously, is the display. Turn your laptop off for cleaning. This is an important item to remember. If you don't, dirt will accumulate more easily on the screen. Make sure you use the cotton T-shirt that is nonabrasive and never use paper towels or tissues to clean your display. Don't use any ammonia-based cleaners as they leave a film. You can always purchase monitor-cleaning solutions in pre-moistened wipes or spray cans. Always spray the cloth first, and then wipe the screen from left to right and then top to bottom. If you wish, you can make your own cleaning solution using Isopropyl alcohol and water. Mix one part water and one part alcohol.

To keep your cooling vents free of dust and debris, use your can of compressed air to clean them. A couple of tips when using compressed air are, make sure that you don't spray it too hard and don't get liquid on the fan blades. Use the cotton swabs to hold the fans in place while you clean them, and never spray directly on them. Wiping them without holding may cause them to over-spin and damage them.

The next step in your laptop cleaning procedure is to make sure that your I/O ports are clean. Use cotton swabs and wipe away large pieces of dirt that have accumulated. The compressed air can be used to blow the rest of the dirt away and remember to be careful to not blow dirt directly into the I/O ports.

And finally, the keyboard should be kept clean at all times. Regular cleaning will prevent your keys from sticking or malfunctioning, and always remember to do your best when it comes to keeping food and drink away from where you are working. Even if liquids are not spilled directly into the keyboard itself, residue remains on your fingers and will transfer to the keyboard. Use your can of compressed air to get rid of the dirt buildup. Consult your user manual first as your keys may actually be removable and this will make it much easier to clean. If you end up removing your keys, remember to put them back in the right place when reinstalling them. You can use your cotton swabs to clean in and around the keys as well.

Just a bit of maintenance and attention to detail on a fairly regular basis will extend the life of your laptop considerably more than if no maintenance is done at all. Like any piece of equipment, your laptop is no exception.

Cheapest Laptops - Go For Them

There can be no denying the fact that today a stage has come where one cannot visualize a world without computers. And why not, after all computers have ensured that one reaches any part of the world at the click of a mouse. Gone are the days when one had to wait for days to receive a letter, now letters are received as soon as they are 'mailed'. Everything, right from storing of files to preparing duplicate copies, have been simplified.

But as it is said, and rightly too, that human beings are funny creatures and that they are rarely satisfied by anything so after computers, or desktops as they are so called, another variety of it came in the market which is popularly known as laptops.

It became an instant hit with the masses. The biggest asset of it of course is that it can be easily carried from one place to another. If one carefully observes the word 'Laptop' one will realise that it has been coined after lot of deliberation and is very apt. One can take laptops to any place, put it on his lap and start working. Surely nothing can get simpler than this.

However, one should always try to buy cheap laptops but without compromising on its quality. One can also opt for used laptops as they can be purchased for far less. But here also one should be very clear that laptop one is purchasing does not have any defect. Laptops are also available in the market at discount rates. One could opt for them as well but only after being convinced that there is no defect in the product. If one buys a laptop after thoroughly checking it then there is no reason why one would not be proud on ones purchase.

Introduction To The Wide World Of Wireless

Connecting to the internet wirelessly allows much greater mobility and efficiency. If you have purchased a new laptop or PDA, it likely has built in Wi-Fi capabilities. Even if your device is a bit older, it is not unlikely that you can still make use of the convenience that Wi-Fi offers. For those who are just now tip toeing into the world of wireless computing, a brief review of some of the basics should help to answer any lingering questions and knowing a few good resources can fill in the gaps.

What Do I Need To Consider Before Using a Public Access Wireless Connection?

Public access sites make connecting easy and offer users the ability to use time productively when they aren't sitting at a desk, tethered to a cable. On the other hand, a wireless connection is a bit slower. When connecting at a public access site, you are sharing bandwidth with others around you, thus there may be delays when downloading, e-mailing, and so forth. The other consideration is security. When connecting via radio waves versus a cable, it is much easier for others to get access to information on your computer without appropriate security measures.

What Do I Need to Connect?

In order to wirelessly connect to the internet a user must first have a Wi-Fi enabled mobile device which supports standard 8.2.11 b or g Wi-Fi. Many new devices have this built-in. For devices that don't have this capability, a Wi-Fi enabled PCMIA card or an enabled Wi-Fi adapter is needed. Of course, if you are traveling with a laptop it is also wise to take along a surge protector, a spare battery, and a power adapter.

Secondly, a user must have access to a Wi-Fi "hot spot", a location which will connect them to the internet. Some homes are now Wi-Fi enabled while many airports, hotels, and public institutions such as libraries are also Wi-Fi enabled. Indeed, some cities are working toward having Wi-Fi cover their entire geographic area. Many local businesses also offer access to Wi-Fi; businesses such as Starbucks and MacDonalds commonly have access. Some hotspots are "free", although most business understandably expect only paying customers to make use of their Wi-Fi service while other hotspots require payment.

How Do I Locate Hot Spots?

There are a number of ways to locate hot spots. Many businesses post signs on their windows indicating they are a Wi-Fi hot spot, but for those in less familiar surroundings searching for a connection doesn't have to be haphazard or time consuming. There are a large number of resources that can be accessed.

Using a web enabled cell phone, users can check sites such as 4info.net to search for hotspots in a given location. Another option which requires a bit of pre-planning is to check one of the many sites available on the internet which allow users to search for hotspots anywhere in the world. Sites such as wifinder.com, wi-fi-zones.com, wifi411.com, and jiwire.com are just a few that can help users find the connection they need prior to leaving home. Another option is to download a database onto your mobile device which can be accessed later without an internet connection. One such service is jiwire.com.

Is There Anything I Need to Know Before Connecting Wirelessly?

Yes, security needs to be attended to as hot spots are unencrypted. Data being transmitted wirelessly is therefore susceptible to being intercepted by others. Users must assure they take precautions to assure the security of their own data; file and printer sharing should be disabled, files should be made private and password protected, and firewall and other security programs should be installed. Many such programs are on the market but jiwire.com offers one such program and the Microsoft site offers more detailed security precautions and instructions to help first timers. (microsoft.com/atwork/stayconnected/hotspots.mspx)

Once you arrive at the hot spot you will also need to enter the SSID, or name of the access point, in order to log on. The SSID can be found on the internet when searching for a hot spot and is also available at the hot spot location. For anyone logging on the first time, step-by-step guidance is available via online tutorials. Again, jiwire.com offers such a guide complete with screen shots to help the beginner.

The leap to wireless computing can offer great rewards such as increased mobility and efficiency. Using just a few online resources can make the process of connecting via Wi-Fi almost effortless.

New Technology Puts Laptops on the Internet Just About Anywhere

Broadband access to the Internet is becoming more and more of a necessity all the time in order to be effective in business and our personal lives. However, getting access- and maintaining that access wherever you go- isn't always the easiest thing in the world to do. In some places getting on the Internet at a high speed is easy to do. For example, your office probably has a T1 connection, or if it's a small business it may have a cable based high speed Internet connection or maybe even some form of DSL. If you take your work on the road with you; bookstores, coffee shops, hotel rooms, airports, libraries, and even some fast food restaurants can all offer wireless hot spots. But sometimes you need to connect to the Internet from other places like your car, a client's home, or even the beach. There is a solution to this dilemma, and it's the same solution that most mobile phones use to access the Internet. It's called a 3G network and Cingular has an array of products that allow you to access what's essentially a wide area, broadband wireless hot spot.

The most basic way to access the 3G network is to get a special wireless card that fits into an open slot in your lap top computer. With this option you'll be able to get on the Internet when you have line of sight of a cell phone tower rather than just within the range of a wireless router. This greatly increases the number of areas in which you can get on the Internet. You'll be able to access files form servers at work, program your DVR to record a great new TV show that you just heard about, check up on your home computer, and possibly even use a VOIP service through this kind of broadband connection in order to save money. (Though Cingular does let you bundle voice services with its 3G Internet access services.

Another way that you can get onto the 3G network is to simply connect your phone to your laptop and use it as a cellular modem. There are several ways to do this, but the major requirement in addition to the phone and the laptop is the service plan, special software- which is free to download- and some way of connecting the phone and the laptop. While you may use a USB cable or a serial cable, in some cases you'll be able to use an infrared connection or Bluetooth technology for even more convenience!

Perhaps the most convenient way to take advantage of the 3G network is to have the cellular modem hardware built into your laptop itself. Right now you can get Dell and Sony laptops among others with 3G cellular modems built into them. Of course that's probably the easiest way to get access to the Internet through your laptop no matter where you take it. That's because anytime you try to install a new device in you're laptop you can't be one hundred percent sure that it will work, and even if you know how to coax it into working, there's no guarantee that it will work smoothly. Having it installed in the factory will eliminate a lot of hassle.

In all, this technology is a great way to stay connected no matter what you do or where you go!

New Wireless Technology Shows Promise of Flexibility and Economy

An increasing number of businesses, municipalities, and individuals are seeing the benefits of wireless Internet access. It's really no wonder that this type of technology is growing increasingly popular because of its flexibility and the fact that it offers an economical way to put a lot of different devices and their users onto the Internet or a Local Area Network. Wireless hot spots are great for flexible use and varying numbers of users. After all, how could there be a better way to supply Internet access to all of the computers in an office, as well as the laptops and Blackberry type devices that employees bring in and use on a variable basis? The same flexibility makes wireless hot spots an attractive thing to install in coffee shops, airports, libraries, and even homes.

There are currently several widely available varieties of wireless Internet access. The most common by far is Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is a short range type of wireless networking that's commonly associated with the wireless hot spots you'd find in a coffee shop or bookstore. It's extremely cost effective and easy to set up just by hooking a wireless router into a broadband Internet connection.

G3 is another popular way to get onto the Internet wirelessly. A G3 network uses technology that's similar to the cellular technology that allows for the used of mobile phones. G3 technology allows smart phones and laptops to connect to the Internet over cell phone towers and while moving at extremely fast speeds like on a train or in a car(the Doppler effect can ruin some types of wireless connections even at relatively slow speeds) and over a very wide area. It's been the technology of choice for professionals who need to stay connected while on the go.

Now there's a type of wireless technology that could serve as severe competition to G3. This type of technology is called WiMax and it combines many of the best points of both Wi-Fi and G3 technologies. Like G3, WiMax can operate over extremely large distances- up to 30 miles. Like Wi-Fi, WiMax is extremely effective indoors- which is something that G3 technology doesn't do so well. WiMax is also much faster than Wi-Fi. The combination of speed and large coverage area makes WiMax extremely effective for providing large numbers of people with high speed Internet access.

One thing that WiMax doesn't do as well as G3 is provide mobile Internet access. That's because at the frequencies that WiMax carriers are currently licensed to operate at the Doppler effect is an issue, while the frequencies that G3 is licensed to use aren't as effected by the movement of the user.

However, this shortcoming of WiMax compared to G3 is simply a regulatory issue. WiMax would be just as good for mobile devices as G3 is if it was licensed to use the same frequencies. And there lies the major explanation for why it hasn't been widely adopted yet- lobbying on the part of companies that have a lot invested in G3 networks and don't want the competition of a technology that could serve more people in a wider variety of ways.

Of course there is the hope that the two technologies will be able to coexist- even possibly in the same devices- so that they can be used in the situations that suit them best.

How To Choose The Right Laptop

I am often asked how one goes about choosing the right laptop. Obviously because of the technological understanding required as well as the plethora of brands out there, it can be very confusing and daunting.

So here is some brief advice on how to go about it:

Firstly decide what you are going to use the laptop for. For example, if it is just to be used for internet, email access and documents then your requirements are very different from someone planning to run processor and memory intensive applications such as games, media applications or CAD. An entry level laptop may be more than adequate for your needs! So why pay for more?

Don't buy a laptop just because it has "lots of features". This is because you will most likely end up paying for features that you don't need. A good example of what I mean by "lots of features" and where this happens a lot is with cell phones. Most people just use them for calls and sms's, yet end up paying exorbitant prices for fancy phones that have a "million-and-one" features, they never use.

Rather carefully consider the specifications and features of various models and decide what is important for your needs. I.e. wireless (mostly standard nowadays), Bluetooth, harddrive size, processor spec, memory size, built in camera etc.

When comparing models which have similar specifications go for the one with the highest performance processor (dual processor preferable) as well as the maximum amount of ram you can afford (minimum 512Mbytes). The better the processor and the more ram, the faster the laptop will be. While one should not buy IT based on "lots of features", it is worth ensuring that you get the best "value for money" with features that are important.

Weight and battery size can also be a deciding factor. If you travel frequently, then a light laptop with a 12" screen may be preferable to lugging around the world with a dead weight.

Choosing the laptop brand is always a personal thing. Sometimes you just like the look and feel of a particular brand. Other times it's a recommendation from a particular person. The brand you choose can also make a huge difference in price. For example recently, I was comparing a Lenovo Z61p against a Mecer E81 with identical performance specifications and the Lenovo was +- R6000 (South African Rands) more expensive. Also the Mecer had more inbuilt features such as a camera and TV tuner. However despite the price difference and extra features, the customer still went for the Lenovo because he loved the "look and feel" of the Lenovo brand over the Mecer.

My favorites brands in order of preference are: Lenovo, Acer, Mecer and HP.

New Technology Makes Mobile Offices Fully Functional

One of the main benefits of newer technologies is mobility, and mobility means the ability to do work in more places. Since the invention of the lap top computer, there have been a steadily growing number of devices that allow people to work when and where they want to. Of course the laptop computer was the first. Even the most primitive ones could allow people to write and work with spreadsheets in the park or in the airport, as well as the doctor's office waiting room, at home, or even sitting in their cars. It didn't take too long for portable printers to come along that could go with the laptop computer. This really opened up the possibilities for professionals on the go. For example, portable printers meant that electricians, cable TV installers, and other service people could simply enter information into computers in their vehicles and then print out an invoice right then and there to hand to the client. This meant no messy handwriting, no long wait, and basically no problems when it came to accountability (and no surprises when a bill came later!). Of course, now we have a whole bunch of ways to get work done when we're away from the office.

Today's laptop computers can keep in touch with the office and the rest of the world using Wi-Fi hot spots and even G3 networks that can provide Internet access even miles away from a transmitter! These same types of technology have been shrunk into portable devices like the Blackberry and other so called Smart Phones that allow us to keep in touch and do work even in places that we probably shouldn't like the bathroom, little league games, the dinner table, PTA meetings, Bar Mitzvahs, Churches, playgrounds, weddings, and funerals.

In effect, all of these different devices and types of technologies have combined to create offices that we can take with us wherever we go. There's always been one piece of office equipment that was missing though: the scanner. Scanners are great for archiving invoices, photos, and a wide variety of other documents. The main problem with bringing a scanner along with your laptop computer and your portable printer though is the fact that scanners are just so huge.

Now there's an alternative in the form of a special kind of scanner that's basically a cylinder about as long at the width of a standard letter sized piece of paper. The scanner is completely self contained with a minimum of eight megabytes and a maximum of two hundred and fifty six megabytes of storage capacity. It comes with integrated controls that allow you to choose the resolution of the scan, and the more advanced model can even use text recognition software to convert scanned text into text that can be edited in a word processing program! Basically, the scanner scans a page simply by being rolled along the length of the page. Once the image is loaded into the scanner's memory, it can then be uploaded to a computer via USB connection.

Now with this new type of technology, it's possible to have a complete office that's completely mobile!

How To Get Free WiFi Access At Your Airport

As many of you know, one of the best places to relax and surf the web in an airport, while waiting for your next flight, is from your laptop in one of those airline lounges. Access to these lounges, however, are for those frequent flyers who have logged some miles with the airline. Unfortunately, not all of us fly as often as those people.

One of the good news for us web surfer/casual flyers, however, is that more often than not, these lounges offer Free WiFi access! Thanks to the wireless technology, the WiFi signal easily penetrates the walls of these lounges. I have to confess that I have logged on to these airport lounge hotspots to gain free Internet access at the airport many times.

Ok, even though these airport lounges are springing up in the airports around the world finding them still takes some work. Thanks go to the people at LoungeGuide.net whom make things pretty easy when it comes to locating these airport lounges. The LoungeGuide.net team did a great job cataloging all the lounges at the airports around the world. All you have to do is locate your airport and there the list of the lounges and their location. I bet there is already at least one lounge in your airport!

I used LoungeGuide.net last time to locate a lounge in the new Bangkok International Airport in Thailand for Free Internet access when I found out about my 4 hour layover. Yes, I did find the lounge with the Free WiFi access using the site. I was happily surfing the web and killing time for Free! Kudos to the Cathy Pacific people for providing the Free WiFi signal from their lounge in the Bangkok Airport.

Well, I hope this post will provide you a way to gain some Free WiFi Access already out there at the airports around the world. Now is a good time to remember to start collecting your frequency flyer miles, so you can be enjoying the free Internet while snacking on free food from inside those lounges!

For those of us who doesn't have access to these airport lounges you can find out more information on both free and paid WiFi service for your airport at http://www.airportwifiguide.com.

New Gadgets Provide Wireless Internet Access From Afar

There's a new class of gadgets that are proving themselves to be more and more useful for people in business who need to stay mobile. These gadgets are all based on wireless networking technology that allows business users to connect to the Internet or their home offices just about anywhere they go. It's not based on WiFi technology- that type of broadband wireless connection is far too limited in range. Instead these devices take advantage of the G3 network which is very similar to what mobile phones use. The G3 network is mostly used by smart phones like the Treo and the Blackberry for functions like surfing the Internet and sending and receiving email. But more and more often, the users of laptop computers are taking advantage of the G3 network in order to do research while they're on the go as well as correspond with the home office, customers, or other colleagues while they're out doing their jobs.

There are three main types of gadgets that can help laptop computers to get onto the Internet using a G3 connection. The most common type of device is a simple card that can plug into one of the expansion card slots on the side of a laptop computer. These cards are available from several providers of wireless phone service including Cingular and Verizon, and look a lot like the same type of card that you can plug into an older laptop computer in order to use it to get onto the Internet using a WiFi hot spot. These are probably one of the more cost effective ways of getting onto the G3 Network.

Another way that you can get onto the G3 network using a laptop computer is to buy a laptop with the necessary hardware built into it. There are actually several computer manufacturers that can provide machines with the necessary electronics built right in. Of course, these are state of the art computers and will be expensive for that reason, but you will have a lot of added convenience built in. For example, you don't have to worry about getting the card up and running every time you boot up. Because it's a fully integrated component right out of the factory, you can have a lot more confidence in it working properly every time you use it.

Perhaps the most novel solution- and practical from the standpoint of not necessarily having to buy any extra hardware- is using your mobile phone as a cellular modem. This is a great way to combine different gadgets and can be accomplished using a USB connection, a serial cable, or even a Bluetooth wireless connection, depending on what kind of hardware set up you have. If you happen to have a mobile phone capable of this feat, this kind of set up may very well be the most practical one for you.

Regardless of which type of gadget you choose to use to take advantage of G3 technology, you'll have to get a subscription form a wireless carrier. Fortunately, these subscriptions don't tend to be very expensive in the overall scheme of things, especially if you can bundle it with mobile phone service.

In all, these gadgets provide you with plenty of options that will allow you to go online just about anywhere.

Always On! The Demise of I-Mode

You may have heard the news that Telstra in Australia has dropped i-mode. Following suite, O2 in UK did the same. Launched in Japan in early 1999 by telecoms giant NTT Docomo, i-mode was viewed as a superior online access method because it was always on; it used a packet switched network to deliver data. Whereas the contender, WAP, ran on GSM networks which are circuit switched. GPRS later came along and got rid of that obstacle for WAP.

Some say that i-mode might be failing because there is not enough content; the sites have to be coded in c-html which is not compatible with WAP browsers. Others say it is because specialised handsets are required. But the problem causing this lack of adoption is perhaps more obvious than that.

i-mode was created by a telecom company which clearly focused on revenues in its domestic market. WAP was launched as a mobile standard by a world wide consortium and focused on providing the world with a method of delivering content to the mobile. NTT developed a technology and successfully deployed it at home and decided not to actively push it out to other international markets until GPRS and 3G technologies had already made their presence well known facilitating the rise of WAP.

NTT was late to the party!

I've no doubt that i-mode will continue to the dominant platform in Japan for many years into the future. But one has to ask why companies are so determined to create proprietary technologies in world that is driving towards open standards. Given their recent involvement in mobile TV standards, maybe we should ask the EU to get involved!!

Buy Used Laptops - 5 Keys to Saving Big

Buying a used laptop is a great way to save money. Since laptops, much like cars, tend to depreciate quite rapidly after their purchase, those willing to put up with a little less performance and a little more risk can walk away with some spectacular deals. In order to help you get the best deals possible, I've put together this list of five tips that can help you save on a used laptop.

1. Know Your Requirements

This is huge. You're not going to be able to save any money if you don't know exactly what you need first. Be honest about your needs. If you're just looking for a portable notebook to write, e-mail, and browse the web with, your requirements aren't that steep. No need to spring for the ultra powerful gaming laptop. On the other hand, if you're looking to do some serious graphics and development work with your laptop, you'll need to spend a little more to get what you need.

2. Know Your Pricing

Once you have your requirements laid out, its time to start looking at specific models. Learn to recognize what certain models usually sell for on the used market, and bargain hun accordingly. If you don't know how much a specific model costs, you're not going to be able to save much money. Study prices carefully, and you'll save big.

3. Take Full Advantage of the Internet

This may seem obvious, but make sure you're using every possible resource the internet has to offer. Check eBay, check Craigslist, check specific computer forums. The more you look, the better chance you have of scoring a great deal.

4. Be Willing to Upgrade

If you've found a used laptop that's almost, but not quite, perfect for your needs, consider taking it all the way there with some upgrades. Of course, you'll have to factor this into the pricing, but you'd be surprised at how $35 worth of RAM can transform an unusable machine into a decent system. Just something to think about.

5. Buy Quality

As with anything else, quality used computers tend to last longer. Since buying a used computer entails a certain amount of risk, you want to minimize this as much as possible, and one of the best ways of doing this is to buy a system known for its quality. Thinkpads may be the classic example of this, but many other manufacturers offer high quality items. Buy these, and you won't be disappointed with your used laptop purchase.

Hopefully this has given you some idea of how you can get a great deal on a used laptop. If you shop well, and do your homework, you'll wonder why anyone goes through the expense of buying new. Good luck with your hunt.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Review - 7 Great Reasons to Buy the IdeaPad Y510 Laptop

Lenovo fans who are shopping for a well-designed, yet innovative laptop need look no further than the IdeaPad Y510. Equipped with updated styling and superb audio, graphics, and multimedia options, this IdeaPad model is a dream come true. Here are just a few of the great features that make the IdeaPad Y510 worth buying:

Updated Housing Case In the past, users were dissatisfied with the way the keyboard and case always looked smudged with fingerprints. By changing the housing case to one with a rougher woven feel the problems with the fingerprints was easily solved. This new design also updated the classic style in a way that paid homage to the original. Superb Graphics What the laptop lacks in lightness, it makes up for with it's superb Intel X3100 graphics. The lack of this feature had been a problem in the past. Monster Hard Drive The included 250GB hard drive is a monster and is capable of handling the computing needs of most users. If you enjoy downloading memory hogging songs and movies, you will probably never need an extra, external hard drive! Brilliant Display The Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 has a display screen with a glossy finish that provides brilliant color. The 1280x800 pixel screen provides a nice, large view. Desktop Quality Keyboard The IdeaPad Y510 keyboard provides a wonderful, high-quality feel and an excellent touch. Missing is the horrible bounce that you find with so many other laptop brands. This provides the user with a near desktop-quality keyboard. The individual keys, themselves, have a good size and a solid, cushioned feel. Great Power Management System The 'novo' switch is another neat feature. The power management system can shift your power options between high, medium, and low with one push of a button! This really creates power savings for the battery life. Superior Sound System Included with the Y510 is a premium Dolby Home Theater audio system. The superior sound plus the 5 speakers and included subwoofer provides a theater-like sound that is absolutely amazing! It is worth driving to the nearest electronic store just to hear the quality of sound that is produced by these speakers!

A couple of the weak areas of the IdeaPad Y510 include:

Increased Weight Users will immediately notice the increased weight. The new Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 weighs in at almost 7 pounds yet is still conveniently portable. No HDMI Hookup You will not find an HDMI hookup so you cannot connect the IdeaPad Y510 with any HDTV. Inability To Play High Level Games Even with the increased graphics, only lower level games can be played. Lenovo is promising to resolve this problem in the near future, however. Poor Viewing Quality At Vertical Angle The viewing quality is reduced outside of the horizontal and straight view angles. If you try to view it vertically you do not have a very good picture but how many times do you really need to do this anyway? Laptop shoppers looking for a laptop that is well-built with a reasonably priced, a sizable hard drive, wonderful multimedia features at a great price won't be disappointed with the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510.

CDPD - Cellular Digital Packet Data (An Introduction)

Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) systems was one of the previous advanced wireless data transmission technology. Generally used as a tool for business, law enforcement communications and operations. But after the introduction of GPRS Technology on the mobile networking, all the hopes around CDPD technology diminished. Today this protocol is only exist as a memory.

About CDPD

CDPD is a specification for supporting wireless access to the Internet and other public packet-switched networks. Data transmitted on the CDPD systems travel several times faster than data send using analog networks. CDPD is an open specification that adheres to the layered structure of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. CDPD supports both the Internet's Connectionless Network Protocol (CLNP).

Features

19.2 kbps raw data transfer rate Full duplex transceiver 600 mW transmit power Integrated TCP/IP protocol stack Proven technology Compact size Rugged aluminum case LEDs show status of CDPD operation Mounting brackets

This features are very low rated on today. But believe me this was one of the most top rated on its time.

Application Interfaces

Standard interfaces include:

AT command serial character streams (uses embedded TCP/IP stack) Host TCP/IP stack communicates with Raven using SLIP Windows 95/98/NT Dial-Up Networking communicates with Raven using PPP In addition, several protocol conversions (Modbus, Opto22, BSAP) have been implemented to allow hosts to communicate with RTUs over CDPD without modifying the host or remote software.

Working of CDPD

CDPD network implements a technique called channel hopping. The way this works is that when a CDPD mobile data unit desires to initiate data transmission, it will check for availability of a cellular channel. Once an available channel is located, the data link is established. As long as the assigned cellular channel is not needed for voice communications, the mobile data unit can continue to transmit data packet bursts on it.

Cell Phones - Some Facts You Need To Know

Most current cell phones have the ability to send and receive text messages. Some cell phones and PDAs also offer the ability to connect to the internet. But cell phones typically do not work well in long tunnels. Whether you're searching for cell phones or accessories, or if you're simply browsing for the best deals on cell phones, You can find them in many outlets, including carrier stores, independent wireless retailers, electronics stores, and Web sites.

If two or more family members use cell phones, consider a family plan that lets up to four people share a large monthly pool of minutes for a smaller additional monthly charge. Three out of four homes have cell phones, keeping parents and children connected across town and across the country. Now parents can use their cell phones to keep a better eye on their children by monitoring who they can and can't call.

Safety

The convenience of cell phones is moving into public safety, and so are the tolerance levels. Cell phones are fine for emergencies but some people just can't part with them. A bill introduced in the state Legislature states that teenage drivers would have to put down their cell phones when behind the wheel. Some states have also past laws that no driver can be on the phone while behind the wheel unless they are using a hands free device. So when traveling check out the state law before talking and driving.

Abroad

You can also use your cell phone in other countries. You may have read that the cheapest way to use cell phones abroad is to buy local SIM cards so you can pay local call rates, but don't over looked the actual cost to buy a cell phone and local SIM cards in the first place. So before doing this, check with your carrier to see if you can use yours and how to set it up.

Nintendo DS Browser - What Makes It So Special?

Deep in the midst of iPhone hysteria, Nintendo and Opera quietly released an application that raised the bar for the mobile browser market. Imagine you are sitting on the couch, relaxing with the family. A commercial comes on the television and your thoughts quickly turn to an eBay auction that ends soon. What do you do now? Get up and walk into the living room to log into the computer and check it? Wake up the laptop and log in? Use your PDA to try and navigate at slow speeds and poor formatting, only to get frustrated and give up?

Instead, you could just whip out your Nintendo DS browser. Open the lid and you are instantly connected. Pull up your eBay auction page from your easily accessed bookmarks, log in with perfect formatting and fast speeds to instantly access your information. When the commercial is over, simply close the lid and don't miss a beat of your favorite show.

Let's go back to the formatting, because this is the most revolutionary feature of the Nintendo DS browser. Browsing on a cell phone or PDA is cumbersome and rife with formatting errors. Pages with frames don't display properly, they don't do well with moving images, and can't handle javascript. A major problem for PDA manufacturers is to try to reformat a website, which is designed for a large screen, onto a tiny screen. Often you have to scroll around just to get the information you need. Nintendo solves this problem by taking advantage of the dual screens. The bottom screen is a birds-eye view of the web page, and you simply move your stylus over the sections you want to read, while it is zoomed in all its glory on the top screen. This type of navigation is so simple and effective, the DS will quickly replace your laptop for many tasks. Some other great features of the Nintendo DS browser are handwriting recognition, the ability to speed up load times by disabling images, and a parental control so parents can be sure their children surf in safety.

Before you buy the Nintendo DS browser you need to be aware of some important information: There are two versions of the browser. One is for the original Nintendo DS and one is for the Nintendo DS Lite. As of right now, only the Nintendo DS Lite version is available in stores. The Nintendo DS original browser needs to be purchased online. Both versions retail for $29.95.

Top 7 Tips to Learn Before Downloading

Are you searching for an iPhone download service? I know I was! Now you need to find your favourite media files to upload into your iPhone. Many download sites have been created on the internet over the past months, some amazing and some just downright horrible. Learning to choose the best iPhone download site is very important. Most of these sites charge approximately the same fee, and it is quite impossible to know which are the good and which are the bad unless you join their service. In order to find the best iPhone download service, the following 7 factors are a good indicator of whether the download service is of good quality or not.

1. Huge database of media

This is especially essential for any iPhone download site, and surprisingly, there are several poor iPhone sites that simply have a very limited range of media. The best iPhone download sites will allow you to find a large collection of media from different genres. It should also provide a wide range of media, like music, TV shows, movies and games all with a one time membership.

2. High speed and quality downloads

Being able to download media at a fast speed is important too. Several poor iPhone download sites have a download speed limit to allow more people to download at the same time. Downloading files from these sites often produce a lot of problems because of the small size of their server, causing many interruptions and errors during download. Good iPhone download sites have very large server space and therefore are able to cope with a large amount of downloads at the same time, and not causing any interruptions.

3. Service Fees

Most good iPhone download services charge a reasonable price for unlimited downloads. If you are considering to download large number of files for your iPhone, you should join a one time fee membership site. Another option that you may choose is the pay per download plan. The more media you download from these sites, the more money you will have to pay. We do not advise that you join pay per download sites, since your costs can accumulate very quickly and you never know how many files you may want to download next. Getting good value for money is very important here.

4. Support and converter software

Some files that you download from the iPhone membership sites may not be fully compatible with your iPhone. Luckily, most quality iPhone download sites provide converter software, whereas the poor quality ones will expect you to get the software yourself. Software that allow you to transfer the files to your iPhone easily should also be provided.

5. Technical support

Occasionally you might encounter problems with the software that the download sites provide you. A good technical support team will quickly help you resolve any issues that you have. If you join a poor quality iPhone download site, you may be stuck with technical issues and have to wait days before you can even get into contact with their staff.

6. Security of files

High quality iPhone download sites will scan files before you download them to ensure that they are free of spyware and adware. You should not put your computer at risk by downloading files from poor iPhone download sites.

7. Legal or no?

The top iPhone download sites respect copyright laws and ensure that all its media files are safe and legal for download. Thus by downloading from top iPhone sites, you do not have to worry about getting into trouble with the law.

Miniature Laptops Have Drawbacks But Are Useful Gadgets

One of the major promises of modern computer technology is the prospect of smaller and smaller gadgets. This promise has been fulfilling in many ways. For example, mobile phones are not only more powerful than they used to be, but that power is built into much smaller handsets. The same miniaturization technology has been translated into gadgets like portable media players that essentially condense an entire home entertainment center- and all of the media that would go with it into a device that can fit in a pocket the same thing is true about computers. Dozens of times the computing power of a top of the line desktop computer can now be packed into a relatively cheap laptop. While the ability to pack more computing power into ever smaller gadgets is a noble goal, in some cases it can go too far. This is often the case when it comes to miniature laptop computers.

These days, even what are considered standard laptop computers come in a variety of sizes ranging from some that have true desktop capabilities and high definition screens to super compact models that are less than three pounds and are designed to be taken just about anywhere.

Now though, it's possible to squeezed full scale computing- even hardware capable of running Windows Vista- into a gadget that's smaller than even the smallest conventional laptop computers. This has blurred the lines between devices like smart phones and laptop computers with a whole class of miniature laptop computers. These devices typically have keyboards that resemble full sized keyboards and LCD screens that are more like those found on laptops (though not as big) than those found on smart phones. These devices are also much more portable than most laptops with sizes that are smaller than paperback books and weights of less than two pounds.

In the past, these gadgets haven't been very popular. They tend to be plagued with high price tags and short battery lives. What really scares away a lot of buyers though is the practicality if actually using these gadgets. In general, these devices tend to have keyboards that are too small for normal touch typing but too large for their owners to reach all of the keys with their thumbs for efficient thumb typing like most people use for smart phones. This is as true now as it ever was.

That said, there are a number of things that modern iterations of these gadgets- like the new FlipStart PC- can do better than what earlier models can do. For example, the FlipStart has an impressive battery life and can get on the Internet using both a WiFi connection and a cellular modem. This device can also run Windows XP or Windows Vista, and attach itself to a full sized external keyboard, mouse, and monitor simultaneously- all of which are impossible with a smart phone. In that sense, while the FlipStart PC does have all of the drawbacks related to its medium sized keyboard, it may be a realistic alternative for anyone who needs lots of computing power and the ability to run full blown computer applications in a small sized gadget.

Aspects of M-Learning

M-learning is a type of personal learning that has infinite possibilities; it allows more and more people to gather knowledge on the go, to realize their dreams of a better future.

The possibilities of Learning through technology are becoming infinite with the advent of computer based technologies and web based technologies.

Electronic or e-learning incorporates all forms of online instruction using electronic devices. Among the many branches of E-learning is m-learning or mobile learning, which is a natural extension of e-learning. M- Learning is facilitated by the use of portable computing devices, like PDAs, palmtops, smartphones, and tablet PCs.

M-learning Technologies

The conditions of the mobile network are ruthless. Given these conditions, it is essential to select a right application environment and design. The mobile network has a narrow bandwidth, and delays are greater than in the PC /Wired network which supports 2 Mbits per second.Connectivity is one of the main differences between a mobile and a PC. There are specially designed networks for the mobiles. WPAN--Wireless Personal Area Network is a wireless network that is normally limited to a small cell radius. A WPAN is used to transfer data between a handheld device and desktop computer.

WAP--Wireless Application Protocol is an international protocol that allows users to access the internet via their WAP enabled mobile phones. The WAP is optimized for mobile networks with narrow bandwidths, mobile devices with small screens and limited, small memory storage, and limited processing and battery power. This makes WAP a perfect option for the mobile network.

Bluetooth-- Bluetooth is a radio standard and communications protocol chiefly designed for low power consumption, with a short range based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device. Bluetooth technology makes it possible to create personal area networks. This enables PDAs to pass messages to and from other mobile devices. It facilitates communication between mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency

.GPRS-- General Packet Radio Service is a is a Mobile Data Service available to users of GSM, In GPRS multiple users share the same transmission channel, only transmitting when they have data to send. This is an always ready internet connection for mobile devices that provides greater speed of connection (171kb/s).

UMTS--Universal Mobile Telecommunications System is one of the third-generation mobile phone technologies. Presently, it is the most common form uses W-CDMA as the underlying air interface. UMTS, using W-CDMA, supports up to 14.0 Mbit/s data transfer rates.

M-learning Process of Communication

SMS--Is a Short Message Service allows users to send/receive text messages of around 160 characters between mobile phones.

MMS-- Multimedia Messaging Service it is the same as SMS but allows the users to send/receive graphics.

MP3s-- Are Audio file format that compresses audio files and enables them to be shared by users.

CAMs-- Video cameras embedded into mobile phone and PDAs witch allows users to take and send/receive pictures.

All these procedures are used in m-learning to enhance content delivery.

M-learning LMS

A basic M-learning package includes a Learning Management System (LMS), which when put together with a micro-portal interface layer will facilitate access to m-learning services. M-learning LMSs have also developed speech-to -text and vice-versa and SMS facilities for devices that have minimum multimedia functionalities. In advanced phases, m-learning LMSs include support for collaborative learning and peer-to-peer interaction.

Conclusion

Mobile technology is once again revolutionizing the education industry as the dotcom once did. The kind of infiltration that mobile phones have reached is astonishing, no other device can come closer, not even computers. Mobiles have a global reach not only in developed countries but also in the third world, they can be found in every village.

WiMAX vs 3G in Australia - Who Will Reign Supreme?

The past 18 months have seen a significant development in the use of mobile and wireless as an Internet connection technology in Australia. This space was previously dominated by wireless broadband providers, such as Unwired Australia and Personal Broadband Australia offering pre-WiMAX solutions. However, the competitive dynamics changed dramatically in 2006 after 3G services became available from all four mobile operators, which was further accelerated by the introduction of HSDPA or 3.5G services towards the end of 2006 and at the beginning of 2007.

For the first time in 2006, the number of mobile broadband users - those using cellular-based 3G/3.5G for Internet connection - surpassed wireless broadband (pre-WiMAX) users and given current market conditions, Telsyte expects mobile broadband users to outnumber their wireless broadband counterparts by two to one in five years' time.

Combined, mobile and wireless broadband users will make up 9% of all broadband users in Australia in 2007. By 2011, more than one in five Australian broadband users will rely on either cellular-based or WiMAX-based technology for their high-speed Internet connection.

Delays in the commercialisation of standards-based WiMAX offerings are slowing down the growth of WiMAX in Australia. That has also been exacerbated by the aggressive 3G/3.5G push by the established mobile operators, with much deeper pockets.

Telsyte believes that WiMAX still has a good chance but its window of opportunity is closing. Although wireless broadband in Australia has continued to register impressive growth, expanding 68% in 2006, the user base remains small and coverage limited to major capital cities. Start-up wireless broadband service providers, such as Unwired Australia, BigAir and Personal Broadband Australia, which operate proprietary networks, continue to face a challenging task of having to expand their coverage and recruit customers quickly while maintaining profitability. Many of them are also faced with the challenge of raising capital at the same time.

Some good news is afoot as the long-awaited standards-based WiMAX is expected to debut in the first half of 2008, which should boost market interest in wireless broadband. Standardisation should also translate into lower capex and opex for operators and cheaper CPEs for customers.

With the introduction of WiMAX delayed for almost two years and the rapid HSDPA progress made by mobile operators, WiMAX's battle against cellular-based 3/3.5G to become the wireless broadband technology of choice is becoming more difficult. Telsyte believes WiMAX has an 18-month window of opportunity until the end of 2008 to prove itself as a viable business or risk going down the path of Australia's WiFi hotspots, which have essentially become free services in selected locations like airport and hotel lounges or are being made free by various local and state governments.

Boost Up Your BlackBerry & Smartphone With Mobile RAM Booster

Everybody talks about Smartphone's RAM, but do you know exactly what RAM means? RAM (Random Access Memory) can be thought of as a temporary storage area for your smartphone. Every time you start a program or open a file, the smartphone stores information related to them in RAM. It's important to realize that RAM is finite, which means that the more applications or files you open, less RAM is available. Have you ever found that your mobile phone runs much more slowly than before? Or are there frequently pop-out windows notifying you that "The memory is low"? As a matter of fact, all these problems may be mostly due to a memory leak or improper memory usage.

Today I would like to introduce a powerful mobile RAM booster to you. It is a newly released software named MemoryUp from eMobiStudio Inc. MemoryUp is a powerful Java virtual machine (JVM) management and RAM boosting tool specially designed for high-end smartphones and BlackBerry. What MemoryUp exactly does is to take control of JVM for each mobile system, smartly analyze running J2ME programs (including hidden programs), automatically allocate and recover respective occupied RAM, and boost system to its best performance. In case of some applications are no longer active on a smartphone or BlackBerry, MemoryUp can reclaim lost resources and put them to better use. By reclaiming resources, the mobile system does not need to access the hard drive as frequently. This will greatly enhance mobile phone's overall performance.

As for me, I am a busy guy who get used to using a BlackBerry 8800 to receive mails and handling my work right on road. There are dozens of J2ME programming running in front-end or back-end on my BlackBerry, which takes lots of RAM from it. I usually feel my BlackBerry is running slowly but do not know what to do. Till now I have been using MemoryUp for a nearly month. All I feel is that MemoryUp has helped me to turn my BlackBerry from a lazy ant to a fast working bee. It runs much more smoothly and stable even when I am running dozens of softwares on my BlackBerry at the same time. And it is also much quicker and stable when I am using my BalckBerry to receive and read emails via internet. To be frankly, I should thank to this little software because it has greatly improved my working efficiency.

The following is some features of MemoryUp which you may be interested in:

- Smart management of Java virtual machine (JVM)
