Thinkpad Screen Repair - What's Involved?

Oh no, you say your laptop screen is giving you problems? That could be an issue that all laptop owners may run into from time to time during the life of their laptops. Thinkpad Screen Repair can involve several parts and getting to them. It could be the inverter, or the lamp, that many call a backlight. If the laptops screen is damaged, the only thing for you to do for your Thinkpad Screen Repair is to replace the whole screen, possibly.

Thinkpad Screen Repair can be easy for the knowledgeable technician with the needed parts on hand. A Thinkpad Screen Repair may not even take that long if it has been diagnosed beforehand.

Finding someone to do your Thinkpad Screen Repair can not be too difficult depending on where you live and how much money is involved. Some stores that can do your Thinkpad Screen Repair may even have a no repair no charge policy if you take it in, or send it off to them for repair and they can not fix it, they may not charge you anything for the diagnosis, and they could even tell you what is wrong, and who can do Thinkpad Screen Repair for you, if they can not themselves.

If you can do your own Thinkpad Screen Repair all you will need it the parts, tools, and a cool head. You should also pretty much know what it is before you get started, instead of guessing. Having someone else already tell you what is wrong, and them being 90% or so sure before you try the repair is great as well.

Thinkpad Screen Repair involves several key screen parts, as well as the actual screen itself. I would not attempt this myself, since I know very little about repairing laptops, and more about some easy desktop repair. If I knew more, I would do Thinkpad Screen Repair myself. Sometimes repair is not an option, and replacement is. Knowing this before it is repaired can be an easy fix. Laptops do not costs as much as they once did.

Thinkpad Screen Repair could costs you between $40-200.00 depending on who does it, and how long it might take. If you have a good friend who is a computer laptop whiz, have them look at it, to see if they might know what you should do. Maybe you will get lucky and they can repair it for you for a very small parts fee. I wish I had more friends like that myself, don't you? Maybe doing your own Thinkpad Screen Repair is easy for the tech types.

Sony VAIO VGNFZ15G - Stylish Laptop With All Useful Technologies

The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G notebook is the rectangular typical looking notebook which does not attract you with its outer body. But it has some of very good features. Its black color gives it a proper professional look.

College students who need to make a style statement please look somewhere else!

Key Features

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has a very average battery life which lasts up to only 2.5 hours. This means you cannot trust this notebook to give you a lot of support when you are traveling. You need to carry the charger along and you need to keep a tab on the battery consumption. The keys provided with this notebook works very efficiently without making much noise and the hand space provided with the notebook is properly designed.

Design

The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has not been designed for trendy people who want to flaunt their notebook amongst their friends and colleagues. It has the basic rectangular shape with pointed edges. The dimensions of this notebook are 355.8 x 254.4 x 24.9 mm with the weight of 2.7 kg.

It is provided with a 15.4" widescreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 dpi. Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has a Clear Bright screen type with Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT Video Display Card. It also has an internal modem whose speed is 56 kbps for internet and fax utilities.

Core Information

The memory of the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G is the process Cache Memory which is 2048 KB. This form of memory can be considered as an intermediary between the main physical RAM and the CPU. The cache makes any data regularly used by CPU instantly obtainable. If the required information is not located in the collection, a fetch is made from the main memory.

Cutting Edge Technology

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G sports a 0.3 megapixel in-built camera. The camera doesn't perform very well but it comes handy when you want to have video chat with your near and dear ones with a little bit of disturbance. The notebook also comes with in-built speakers as well. These make the gaming experience on this laptop a nice one with the help of its Intel High Definition Audio. Some of you might miss the finger print reader, but otherwise the notebook is worth buying.

Conclusion

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G does not belong for the hip-hop youth of today. It suits well for a home setup. It can also be used professionally but you need to check on the battery usage now and then.

My Journey Into Mobile Learning

For the last 4 or 5 years I have been on an amazing journey into the fascinating world of mobile learning.

Yes, I know that we all hear and learn things while driving in the car or walking along the path with family and friends but what I am talking about is the delivery of training and lessons by means of mobile phones, pocket PCs and other portable devices.

In Australia there are 19.7million mobile phones - not bad for a country of 21 million people. I keep wondering how many babies are owners of mobile phones...

For the first couple of years I was interested in and distracted by the actual technology and what it could do. I had the most amazing time buying up all sorts of bits of equipment that offered various sorts of communication and mobility. What I learnt from that was that technology evolves at a rapid rate and you can safely assume that new technology is out of date within 90 days!

I presented the range of technology to many conferences and became known as the one who always has the newest "toy" to show off.

While this was fun and I now have a great deal of knowledge about mobile devices, it didn't actually give me a lot of progress in terms of developing ways in which teachers and students could use them to effectively connect with each other.

Text messaging was one obvious thing we looked at but it has limited value and the interesting this we found is that while it was OK for a student to text a teacher at any time that suited, that same student got quite annoyed if the teacher initiated a message at a time that the student felt was not appropriate!

Working with the multimedia team I was able to develop some interesting games as learning activities that were designed specifically for pocket PCs. You can have a look at these early learning games on my site at caryloliver.com to give you an idea of the sort of thing we developed.

The down side of this was that if a teacher wanted to develop a learning game it became a fairly cumbersome process of briefing the guys, testing and correcting etc... and then finally having to find a platform so that students could access it. Unlike making a computer choice between Apple and PCs, when it comes to mobile devices there are hundreds of platforms.

I needed a really simple way for teachers to take those first steps into preparing their material in a digital friendly format.....

To cut a long story short I finally tripped over Digital Story Telling! This was the breakthrough I had been looking for and I have hardly stopped for breath since.

Digital story telling is a means of taking a series of still photos, adding some motion and transitions to link them, recording a commentary in your own voice and ending up with a fantastic little movie! I use free software from Microsoft so there is no costly investment and within a very short space of time you can go from stutter to stunner!

The programme itself (Photostory 3) takes you through a step by step process to import the pictures you want, add effects, motion and transitions and then record what you want to say on each picture. It then folds it all together into a seamless movie. Then I transfer the finished movie to Movie Maker (also free) and add great looking titles, music and other effects to make it truly professional.

Once completed I can save these movies in a whole range of sizes so that they are able to be shown on mobile phones through to large screen TVs.

I labelled these as digi-lessons and started getting teachers to sit down beside me and tell their stories. One teacher talked about the devastation and silence as she showed us pictures of a recent bush-fire area; another teacher took pictures of a whole heap of hazards around a worksite and discussed them. We have some really interesting stories about growing and roasting coffee and more. And so the ideas started to flow....

The next step was, of course, that the students wanted to deliver their assignments in digital story telling format and, of course, the teachers thought this would be great: read 100 poorly written assignments or watch 100 enthusiastically produced movies? a no-brainer!

I found myself spending more and more time teaching people how to make their digital stories and how to maximise the way in which they used the software.

And this is what finally got me to the point of producing my digital story telling starter kit as more and more people were asking me to help them. I put together a sample story about my dog, I created a tutorial in digital story format and I also did the tutorial in written format. In addition to this I have also created a weekly tips e-mail that reflects some of the questions I am most frequently asked and the little things that make a big difference to the finished item.

My greatest buzz out of all of this to date was when I was showing a conference a movie about a project I had done with a group of disengaged students. One of the students had done their whole assignment in digital story format and after the presentation one guy came up to me and asked if he could have a copy of the movie. It turned out he was the uncle of this student and he wanted the show the family what the student had done - how many family members would bother to read a piece of written work?

I guess you can tell that I get pretty excited about this and I just hope that I can infect a few more people because digital story telling really is such fun and so simple. Has anyone tried and would you like to?

PDA Phones - 'Palmtops' That Can Replace Your Laptop

In an age of unprecedented technological development, the tech-market is witnessing the emergence of new and nice gizmos every now and then. Very often they come with some added features and functionalities. Thus, they outdo their previous versions and presage the arrival of more promising gadgets. This, in turn, takes the expectation of users to a flying a level. They want devices that can make their work further easy and quick.

Technologists take this as a challenge and provide them with what they want. PDA phones are an outcome of one such challenge. Devices like laptops and mobile phones have been already offering valuable service to lot many users. They are ideal for busy bureaucrats or smart executives. Laptops allow them to carry documents in bulks from place to place. Mobiles help them keep in touch with others even when on move.

But there occurred the necessity of a device that can do the work of laptops and mobile phones together. Executive and managers found that they can save substantial amount of their time if they can run their office functions even when they are on move. For that they needed a device that combines the features like wireless connectivity and provision of getting access to the office files. To cater to this the need of such type of users PDA phones are invented.

Give Me My - Handheld Super Computer - The Future of Personal Mobile Tech

If you had a super computer what mysteries of the life experience would you wish to discover? What if you have a handheld super computer attachment for your Blackberry? What if you iPhone was just a little bit larger but also doubled as a Super Computer - Imagine that. Can you imagine the market potential for something like this, what if you invented one? Well, someone has already beat you to the concept as the BBC has just reported on a project, which is well under way.

A European group of research scientists are now projecting this concept will be a reality soon. Such wide spread use could change everything we know, assist humans in all sorts of endeavors, eliminate foolhardy mistakes and monitor your bio-system to perfection. These super hand-held computers will use nanowires and will be able to process 100s of trillions of calculations per second. The Nanowires are so small you could put 100 along side a human hair and they would still be smaller.

The discovery, which led to the concept came when researchers kept making the nanowires smaller and smaller and found that they had new behaviors, which were predictable, and controllable. Therefore these behaviors could be used like switches to signify one's and zero's. Still, some are skeptical, but in 15 years, who knows, we might all be sporting super computer hand-held computers allowing us to unlock the secrets of the Universe.

Maybe they will be called the iSuperComputer? Maybe they will be called the BlackNano by Blackberry or maybe they will sport a Dimensional Plane Operating system, instead of a Windows or Vista environment? Super Nano Computers cometh, do not leave the house without it.

Laptops - The Comfortable Computers

A laptop computer is a small mobile computer that weighs 2-18 pounds based on size, materials, and other factors. Being smaller in size than a desk top, a laptop computer usually runs on a single main battery. Generally they have liquid crystal displays and use different memory modules for random access memory (RAM).

It was in 1981; Osborne 1, the first commercially available portable computer was produced. In spite of the large size, this model was a beginning of revolution paving way for the later models. This model helped the professionals in carrying the data along with them. Later came various models of laptops, but the true; laptop was the Grid Compass 1101, designed by Bill Moggridge, released in 1982. It was in 2000, the first commercial IBM laptop, Kaypro was launched, which was featuring a 25 line by 80 character LCD display, a detachable keyboard, and a pop-up 3.5 inch floppy drive.

With the passage of time, and growth in technology, laptops became common name among professionals. But time gave rise to various health issues related to laptops. According to a study conducted by the State University of New York, it was found that sitting in front of laptops was causing the serious problem of infertility among men. Generally laptops are the easy targets of theft, which has led to serious social problems.

The different terms used for subtypes of laptop computers mainly include:

UMPC: The Ultra-Mobile PCs that are easily portable as are small in size.

Ultra portables: The expensive laptops with screens typically less than 12 inches diagonally and a weight of less than 3-5 lbs.

Thin-and-lights: The laptops generally weighing in between 4-6 lbs with a screen size of between 12 and 14 inches diagonally.

Mainstream: Laptops weighing in between 5 and 7 lbs with a screen size of 14.1 inches and 15.4 inches.

Solar Power for Notebook and Laptop Computers

This may seem incredible and impossible to do, but many computer technophiles are going "green" when they travel with a laptop in tow these days. If you are familiar with "extreme" or remote computing this may not seem too far fetched. Let's not forget that many professionals enjoy rugged recreational activities, but just can't always leave the office behind.

The idea of solar power for remote computing is finally catching on. It is working for everyone from the cross-country cyclist and weekend camper, to regular working stiffs that have to rough it on the job.

Solar power is not just a possibility, but could be a necessity for those that go remote. Solar panels are used to collect solar energy for direct use or storage in batteries to power up later.

Here is how solar, or photovoltaic energy is realized from the "How Stuff Works" website. If you are not an electrical engineer or scientist of some sort, don't be surprised if this does make light bulbs go off in your head. You can always come back and do further research on the Internet.

"The solar cells that you see on calculators and satellites are photovoltaic cells or modules (modules are simply a group of cells electrically connected and packaged in one frame). Photovoltaics, as the word implies (photo = light, voltaic = electricity), convert sunlight directly into electricity. Once used almost exclusively in space, photovoltaics are used more and more in less exotic ways. They could even power your house. How do these devices work?

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently the most commonly used. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. PV cells also all have one or more electric fields that act to force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off to use externally. For example, the current can power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its built-in electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce."

To continue, we will discuss the smaller hand held devices for cell phones and PDAs, all the way to powerful self-contained and fully remote commercial solar systems. Here are several links that describe the use of solar power for mobile computers and other wireless devices from the Do-It-Yourself perspective.

It is amazing what is already available and out in the marketplace for solar power options. As energy costs and energy conservation continue to garner interest as mainstream issues, we should see the rapid development of solar integrated design features. Soon it may be a standard feature and part of everyday portable computers.

Let's hope so, because going green is good for everyone, not just an intriguing proposition for rugged notebook users and remote computing,

Hand Held Solar Kits

Solar kits are designed to be self-contained. They combine solar cells, rechargeable batteries, and a wide selection of cables. These won't power a portable laptop yet unless it's a miser on energy, but they will keep you connected with a limitless power supply for your cell phones, Smart phones, PDAs, and smaller devices. As long as the sun is shining, or the batteries are charged up, you will have power.

Many purists will argue anything solar is not really "green", either because it will never be energy positive (will never generate more power than it took to manufacture), or because it has a battery, making it environmentally unfriendly by default.

Arguments aside, at issue for rugged and remote users is a reliable power source, and having some sense of being connected. So, solar charging devices can be considered either as "convenience efficient" or "emergency efficient". Don't take this as a challenge to engineer types that will want to get their slide rules out, just a notation that these solar kits are an honest attempt at the "plus" column for reducing the human carbon footprint. Wider adoption and acceptance of new technology usually results in greater efficiencies.

Two promising examples that have had good reviews are the reasonably affordable products from Solar Style Dot Com, and the pricier Solio Dot Com. Do a search on YouTube and you will find many videos of Solio in action. If it did not work, we would know it by now.

Portable Solar Power Docking Stations

The idea of using solar power in remote situations is nothing new. The question for us is how well, and how fast, a solar power station will power up your notebook or laptop. Other considerations are the size, weight, and portability. You will find many products in this category, but few online reviews that confirm that these products will actually perform as advertised. The best source I have found for honest reviews in this regard is TreeHugger.com.

There are very few winners in the category of a portable solar power docking station to efficiently run a laptop computer. One that does get good reviews on the subject is the "PowerDock System".

Do an online search for PowerDock System, and you will find many retailers and dealers at different price points. So be patient and shop around. Your Mobile Desk Dot Com is the best resource for a complete descriptions of the PowerDock product line. These include from the least expensive to the most expensive: PowerDock Lite, PowerDock Basic. PowerDock Executive, and PowerDock Elite.

Power Dock Systems are relatively expensive, and range in price form a few hundred dollars on up to $450.00. The PowerDock is an attractive product design an weighs in from 5 to 13.5 pounds.

Another potential winner is the Notepower Solar Laptop Charger from Sierra Solar Systems. You will see the Notepower Solar Charger pop up along with the PowerDock in a search engine query for these type of solar products. Plug in the SmartAdapter with extended 10 foot cord included, and start charging or topping off your computer battery as long as sunshine is available.

Once again, this is not a review recommendation, but the Notepower has had favorable comments by TreeHugger.com and other reliable sources, giving no pause to mention it here. The 3 lb. Notepower is not designed with a storage battery, but the 20-30 watts of power will charge and run most laptop computers, according to the specs.

You may not consider the Notepower as a true solar docking station, but it is an attractive portable solar package for a temporary power solution. Originally priced around $250.00.

Commercial and Military Grade Solar Power Systems

Some of the best remote solar power systems are designed to meet military standards. You could even say that anything designed for military use is pretty much guaranteed to perform. These systems will compliment anything in the fully rugged notebook computer category.

Energy Technologies, Inc. in Ohio, USA makes a wide assortment of military standard power equipment for field use. Things like field deployable inverters, converters, UPS, engine-generators, along with solar power stations with the trade name Tactical Solar Products.

The product features for these Tactical Solar Products include various combinations of charge controllers, power storage batteries, AC/DC power adapters, multiple DC outputs, and a large selection of folding solar panels. The specific product line is the Solar Suitcase I, Solar Suitcase II, Solar Suitcase III, Solar Suitcase IV, along with the folding SolarTacticalPanels.

Solar Suitcases I-IV can charge Lead Acid, Li-Ion, NiCad, NiMH & other types of rechargeable batteries. The nearly bullet proof folding solar collection panels are available from a 15 Watt to a hefty 330 Watt output panel set. This is "green power", but you are out of luck if you prefer a color other than the two camouflage patterns available.

You will have to call ETI for costs, as product pricing is not published on the ETI websites.

Computing Solar Power Wrap-up

We have looked at several of the many possibilities for solar power, and going "green" with remote computing. The possibilities are becoming more reliable and starting to make more economic sense. You can try to go solar and Do-It-Yourself, or for the less technically inclined there is a wide range of retail and commercial applications for sale. We have attempted to highlight a few of the proven DIY options, and find some of the readily available products, and systems from various online reviews.

Some of the solar power resource websites you might want to keep an eye on include: Altapower.com, RadioLabs.com, and CTSolar.com. There obviously are many more you will find now and in the future with your favorite search engine.

As computing devices become smaller and more mobile, and with nascent technology soon to push the boundaries of wireless networks, solar power could prove to be a factor in your computing future.

How Quickly Mobile Learning Has Progressed In 5 Short Years!

The first mobile learning workshop took place in Birmingham, UK in 2002 and the 6th International Mobile Learning Conference just concluded in Melbourne Australia. In five very short years we have gone from 'playing' with toys to planning the future or our infrastructure to accommodate mobile delivery in all its forms...

I have been involved in mobile learning since 2003 and it is interesting to reflect on the way in which it has grown and been taken up over what is really quite a short time. As a person who has worked hard to introduce mobile learning I am very aware that the reaction to my efforts has moved from "what on earth are you on about?" to "please come and help us get it happening!".

For those who are asking the question, mobile learning is the delivery of teaching and learning by means of portable, handheld or mobile devices as a part of the overall mix in the way in which teachers and students interact. But like all new concepts there is a flow in the evolution and reflecting on each of the mobile learning conferences I have mapped it as follows:

2003 - mLearn in London:

The theme was 'New Possibilities' and we looked at mobile phones and some personal digital assistants (PDAs). We talked about issues like navigation on such small devices and texting and some of the games that already existed on mobile phones. We also started talking about knowledge management and the types of learning that might apply.

The state of mobile learning was best summed up at the time by John Traxler who is currently at Wolverhampton University in the UK:

"mobile learning is at a stage of small scale projects working to extablish aspects of techninal feasibility in specific educational settings"

2004 - mLearn in Rome:

Holding a conference dealing with leading edge technology in a 12th century castle in Rome was an interesting experience!

The theme this time was "The Potential is Significant" and we started to discuss shifts in pedagogy, the impacts of using portable devices and usability of the digital learning materials that were being developed. We were starting to see the newer smart phones and wireless was starting to appear in some places which would immediately expand the concept of mobility.

We were now talking about using PDAs and mobile phones for delivery of materials in a way that suited different learning styles, in context and overcoming some of the earlier barriers.

2005 - mLearn in Cape Town:

The theme "Learning is in your hands" was particularly appropriate in a country where internet coverage is minimal but mobile phone coverage is almost total!

At this conference we started to hear about convergence and mobile content management. We looked at practical examples of how people were rolling out mobile learning to larger groups and organisations and we started to talk about the strategies required for teacher training and student learning support by means of and for these technologies. Wireless was now available and expected.

We were now really seeing how mobile technology had the potential to break down the barriers of location and time.

2006 - mLearn in Banff:

OK, so we did manage to go from one great location to another but we are supposed to be mobile and learning - right?

The theme in Canada was "Across cultures and generations" and in context of the then small but growing social computing revolution this theme picked up on the way in which communications technology was breaking all barriers for those who wanted to stay in touch.

We heard about the $100 laptop and the desire to see every child with a laptop. We talked about digital libraries where every book was being converted to digital format and therefore accessible anywhere on any device. We talked more seriously about audio as part of teaching material mix and explored the evry increasing means by which delivery could take place and the ever increasing variety of devices that offered mobility.

We started to understand the 'Net Generation' who have hypertext minds and who approach learning in a totally different way to those who left school a longer time ago!

This conference opened our eyes to the way in which exploring mobility was shrinking the world and making access to learning a reality for anyone from anywhere.

2007 - mLearn in Melbourne:

The theme we chose for this conference was "Making the Connections" and connectivity was certainly the flavour of the conference!

Even before the first keynote speaker had finished her comments and the reaction to those comments was being blogged, twittered, ninged, wikied and otherwise posted into cyberspace! Speakers were asked questions relayed through attending delegates from places all over the world.

We explored infrastructure issues and we talked extensively about pedagogy incorporating technology and how the devices themselves are now evaluated less for their 'wow' factor as for their usability in the teaching mix. We talked about integration and embedding and the way in which social computing might be used on mobile devices as well as the fact that mobile devices now incorporates laptops with wireless connections.

And we closed the conference looking forward 10 years and speculating what we might do now to make sure we continue to delivery quality education by means of the new and emerging technology.

So where are we now: Mobility is simply a reality and we expect to be connected at all times on all devices. Technology, no matter how marvelous it is, will not fix bad pedagogy but it will give massive impact to good teaching practice.

At the end of the Conference we officially launched the International Association for Mobile Learning. Find out more by following the links at my website.

The area continues to grow and develop and I am busier and busier working with those who want to go down this road - contact me via my website http://www.caryloliver.com

Thinking Of Upgrading Your Laptop To Vista?

Well though it seems like a silly question, I believe they are minority of them wanting to upgrade. Well Microsoft Vista is a good OS; though as much I prefer Windows XP for customizability. I think it is important that I share these facts so as nobody would make the wrong move before moving to the "Vista ship". Here are some important facts which you need to take note before upgrading your current Operating System of your notebook to Windows Vista.

1 - System Check

Download and run "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor".This software will examine your notebook and will give you a report whether is your notebook capable of meeting's Vista requirement.

2 - Processor Check

Your CPU processor must be at least running at a clock speed of 800MHz. For Premium OS models, it must have a 1 GHz minimum requirement.

3 - RAM Check

If you think XP consumes a lot of RAM, Vista might be you worst nightmare. Make sure you have the minimum 512 mB installed. 1 GB of RAM is recommended.

4 - Graphics Check

To run the beautiful Aero theme, your graphic must support the 64mB VGA Ram. Beware this theme is nice but consumes a lot of memory.

5 - HDD Check

Make sure you have enough hard disk space. Vista requires quite an amount of space for its system files, etc. An 80GB hard disk can be served as a minimum requirement.

6 - Optical Drive Check

Make sure you have a DVD drive installed. You can forget about Vista if you only have a Combo drive installed only.

7 - Vista Versions

Choose your Vista OS. One thing about Microsoft is that they have so many versions of the releases... (it sucks)

Vista Home Basic - The lowest end of all. No Aero-theme function.

Vista Home Premium - More like the Windows XP Media Center if you like to compare.

Vista Business - Similar to functions of Windows XP Professional except it is in Vista.

Vista Enterprise - With added security and encryption tools like BitLocker and Drive Encryption. More application compatibility tools and multi language support.

Vista Ultimate - The King of Kings ( nothing to do with Triple H's entrance song from Motorhead). The all in one package of all the rich Vista functions.

8 - Application Compatibility Check

Just like XP, Vista has its own woes when it comes to programs compatibility. Run Application Compatibility Toolkit to help you identify programs that might not worked on the Vista platform.

9 - Data Backup Check

Always before doing any form of upgrade, please remember to backup your files. All the documents, pictures and important files must be backed up so that you won't loose those precious files. Data is essential and backup is always a must. You might not know what will happen during you upgrading installation.

I hope the 9 things can give you guys a detailed thought before any upgrade you've might want to make. Be it from XP to Vista, XP to OSX or XP to Linux or any other operating system which you might want to pursue.

How to Get a Free Laptop

Getting a Free Laptop has become a new trend. A "Get a Free Laptop" website owner was recently interviewed by CNN - since then the site's laptop giveaway had skyrocketed!

So how does the whole free laptop program work? The site which offers you a free laptop requires from 3 to 10 sign-ups to different programs and products. Some are free trials, some are 1-5$/month memberships which could be cancelled.

When you sign up for such membership, you become a potential client for the company. The owner of the site receives a pretty decent amount of money for each and every person who signs up through his (her) site. So if each company offers you 200$ for a new client, it adds up to 1000$ from 5 companies. Laptop costs 500$. When you sign up for all the memberships, the owner of the Get Free Laptop site receives 1000$, then sends you a 500$ laptop and his is profit is roughly 500$ per person. It's a win-win-win situation for you, advertiser and the Free Laptop site owner.

Be aware! Some of these sites are pure scam and will never give you a penny for anything. Certain sites were talked about in the news on CNN and NBC - the credible sites, the ones that actually give you a laptop when you complete the required offers. Spending 1$-20$ on great offers and receiving a brand new free laptop for it is one heck of a deal!

When you decide to get a free laptop, make sure the site is legit and real. If the site does not offer a way of getting in touch with them - it is 100% scam. You should also be able to verify your gift status at any time.

The Battery Is Your Laptop's Weak Link

We talk about being mobile, part of a wireless world, untethered (OK, it's just me who says 'untethered'). But if, mid flight and mid sentence, you've ever cursed your laptop battery for giving out, or developed the habit, when you walk into Starbucks, of immediately peering under chairs and through people's legs for a power outlet, you'll know that the reality doesn't quite match the talk. Our laptops might be more portable than before, our connections might be faster and involve less cabling, but we know our batteries will let us down. We still need juice.

Of course, there are some people who never seem to need an outlet. At one conference, I offered a slot in a power strip I had managed to purloin to a fellow journalist, only for him to turn it down, snootily proclaiming he was using a Mac and therefore didn't need power (personally, I don't agree with his view that Macs have longer-lasting batteries; I suspect he just had a newer battery than mine). And some people, who always seem to be ridiculously good-looking, sit in Starbucks all day in front of laptops without any visible wires (I suspect their laptops are turned off). But what can the rest of us do to make the most of our batteries

The truth is: not an awful lot. 'I watch the consumer becoming more and more agitated,' says Christina Lampe-Onnerud, founder and chief executive of U.S. battery-technology company Boston-Power Inc. 'My message is very simple: There's very little you can do.' Of course, Ms. Lampe-Onnerud has an ax to grind: Her company is working with heavyweights like Hewlett-Packard Co. to launch a new kind of battery called Sonata, which she says will have a lifespan as long as that of your laptop and give you at least four hours of power between charges, compared with two to three hours with existing batteries. (She declined to say when they'd be available and how much they'd cost.)

Truth is, there's a lot of smoke and mirrors about batteries. Computer companies offer plenty of advice about how to get the most from yours, but it's probably wise to keep your expectations low. Battery technology still relies on chemical reactions taking place inside those innocent-looking slabs of plastic, and improvements happen, according to Isidor Buchmann, founder and chief executive of Canadian battery-charger maker Cadex Electronics Inc., far more slowly than improvements in, for example, chip speed.

So assume your battery is a dying beast as soon as you buy it. It only has a few hundred cycles -- from charged to empty -- before it starts to resemble a very expensive doorstop. The trick is to slow the dying process. To do this, it's best to think of your battery as separate from your laptop. Yes, it fits snugly underneath it, but that doesn't mean it should live there.

When you buy a new laptop or a new battery, go through at least one cycle of charging it fully and then discharging it, and do the same again every few months. This will reset the digital circuit that estimates the battery's charging status, so it doesn't stop charging prematurely. Resetting the gauge, says Atsushi Kumaki, director of ThinkVantage Technologies at Lenovo-Group Ltd.-owned Yamato Labs in Tokyo, 'will gain you a few percent' of charge each time.

Then plan your day. If you know you're going to use the battery, charge it fully beforehand. If you're not going to need it, let the battery run down until it's just under half full and remove it from your laptop. (Of course, this means you no longer have a battery backup if power fails, so if you're vulnerable to power outages or colleagues yanking out the power cord with their legs, you might not want to do this.) Laptop batteries should be stored at about 40% full; fully charged, they're a fire hazard, but if you store them entirely discharged, they might not charge again.

The reason for storing your battery outside your laptop is simple: Laptops get hot. If a battery is too hot, it starts to discharge itself and this, over time, reduces how long each charge lasts. Tests conducted by Cadex indicate laptop batteries under such conditions will last only 12 to 18 months, something I'm unhappily able to confirm.

So the battery is best kept somewhere else, preferably at room temperature. Some people recommend keeping it in the fridge (though not in the freezer), but I don't think you need to go that far -- just don't store it in your car in hot weather.

Helpful Advice On Wireless Internet Troubleshooting

You spent all of this money on this stupid wireless internet router and cards and now the thing doesn't work! Just relax. Let's do some wireless internet troubleshooting to find out what is going on and maybe we can solve your problem and get you up and surfing in no time.

Buying The Right Stuff

Wireless internet troubleshooting begins in the store where you are buying your equipment. All wireless routers and wireless network cards do not magically work together. The first rule in wireless internet troubleshooting is to make sure your equipment is compatible. Wireless routers only work with certain types of wireless network cards and that information is always printed clearly on the box. So when you are matching up the wireless router you want with the wireless network cards make sure you check the boxes and make sure it will all work together. If you are unsure then ask a clerk for assistance. Wireless internet troubleshooting is easier to do when you buy the right equipment.

Firmware Updates

When you are wireless internet troubleshooting the first thing you look for is connections and plugs to make sure everything is plugged in correctly. Then you check the indicator lights to see if everything is operating correctly. Sometimes when you are wireless internet troubleshooting you will notice that your indicator lights will just click to off every once in a while. When you reboot everything it works fine for a little while and then it dies again. This may be an indication that you need to update the firmware on your router. Firmware is a blast of commands that are sent to your router that update its internal brain and allow it to function properly. The easiest way to accomplish this is to simply call the manufacturer of your wireless router and have them walk you through the steps to update your firmware. Once you learn how to do it you can do it yourself and you should check for firmware updates at least once every three months.

Bad Modem

For some reason people refuse to believe that their internet provider has sent them a bad modem. Broadband modems are not perfect and they can go bad just like any other equipment. If you have tried everything else in your wireless internet troubleshooting then you may want to call your internet provider and have them check your modem. They can do that from their office and can tell you almost instantly if there is a problem. Broadband modems are like any other piece of electronic equipment in that they can fail too. So if you have tried everything else then do not rule out the broadband modem, call your provider and have them run a check.

Choosing the Right Laptop

With the Christmas season fast approaching, it's time to start researching your big ticket item purchases. The savvy buyer can save big bucks if you do your homework. Laptops remain one of the top Christmas gift requests. The price of laptops in recent years has come down considerably, but you will want to make sure you are buying a laptop that fits the need of the user.

Before going online to purchase a laptop, I find it helpful to make a short list of what the actual needs are. Price is always at the top of most people's lists, but there are other factors that are just as important. I have created a short list of questions to consider:

Keys to choosing the right laptop

Who is the laptop user? When choosing a laptop, it is important to understand who will be using it..,high school student, college student, working professional, etc. Where will the laptop be used? For heavy mobile users such as college students and working professionals, size, weight and battery life are very important. So when pouring over the reviews and spec charts, keep those factors in mind. The average high school student uses a laptop from room to room in their house, and have ample access to AC power most of the time. So for these users, the factors listed above may not be as critical. How will the laptop be used? The more mobile the user, the more durability plays a role. Heavy users spend a great deal of time start and shutting down their laptops every day. On average, the heavy user will open and shut their laptops 5 times a day. Although that may not seem like a lot of wear and tear, there is also the issue of general handling. Heavy users will be going from location to location, in and out of cars, buses, plane, on a constant basis. This increases the likelihood of damage to the laptop, via dropping, bumping and banging, coffee spills on the keyboard, etc....which leads me to service contracts. Should I buy a service contract for my laptop? In one word, YES. When you think about carrying around a fragile piece of electronics costing $1000 or more, the price of a typical service contract is a bargain. The price for service contracts on a laptop is generally in the $200 dollar range. You should never even think about buying a laptop without one. The top manufacturers have outstanding service agreements. I have 3 Dell laptops, and have needed service for 2 times. In each case, a technician was on-site within 24 hours, corrected the issue, at no cost. Every service plan differs, so be sure you read the coverage offered with the same scrutiny you give the laptop components. How much should I expect to pay for a laptop? It used to be hard to find a quality laptop under $1000; however, this is no longer true. There are several companies offering what I consider as quality products, starting around $500. The options or upgrades you select have a large impact in what you can expect to pay. Having a list of what you want in a laptop, such as memory, speed, hard drive size, burners, etc..will help speed up the process when you go shopping. Although online laptop manufacturers allow a great deal of customization, my experience has been to first look at the pre-bundled or specials they offer. You can save plenty of money with these laptops because they can build them ahead of time. These specials will also come with additional upgrades at lower costs. So plan ahead, but be open to see a value when it is available. What Laptop Brand Should I Select? Great strides have been made in the laptop industry, however, there are still the good, not-so good, and greats of the world. Personal experience has always been the main reason I have stuck with Dell. Great value and service, no complaints. Before recently purchasing my new desktop computer, I really thought I would go with Apple. Apple is at the forefront of design, style, and innovation. But when the rubber met the road, I decided that Dell has never let me down and choose another Dell. You will always read reviews, pro and con, about any product...with the exception of Apple. The Apple owners of the world are a united front. They love Apple...period....and I am OK with that. If you have no past experience computers, ask a trusted friend, people in the office, etc. Computer advice is cheap and in great supply. For online reviews and test results, my laptop reviews always start with PCWorld

The Future of Ringtones

Ringtones are now part of the mainstream media market, and have been around in some form for nearly a decade. For many people, ringtones are a fad, and a nuisance, but they remain a significant part of modern life, that continues to have cultural and social relevance. So, what are the key trends shaping the future of ringtones and how can we expect them to evolve going forward?

The first key trend is towards do-it-yourself or D-I-Y. The ringtone market has a history of high prices being charged both for single items (a ringtone can cost $7 compared to $0.99 for a full track music download) and, more recently, and notoriously, subscription ringtone services frequently charge a weekly or monthly fee in return access to a certain number of downloads or "club". However, with the advent of mp3 support in most mobile phone handsets, it is now possible for consumers to easily create their own ringtones, either by loading a full track onto their handset or creating a ringtone by editing an mp3 file using cheap and readily available software. Therefore, the high prices sustained in the past are unlikely to be tenable in the future and the price of ringtones is slowly falling towards zero.

However, music on mobile is moving beyond ringtones, as mobile becomes the default device for listening to music on the move. On any form of public transport you can now see people listening to their music collection on their mobile phone, in a similar way to using an ipod. Already, in Japan, more music is downloaded onto mobile phones than onto PCs. A part of this trend is the increasing tendency towards teenagers using mobile music as a form of identity, far beyond using a simple ringtone. A common site in many cities is for young people to play music out load from their mobile phone speaker as they walk along the street, or sit on the bus, as a kind of "call-sign" or "boom-box".

Finally, as the traditional ringtone industry declines, a range of new innovations are emerging. For example, ringback tones are ringtones carried over the mobile phone network, which are heard by the caller instead of a normal dial tone. A company called Vringo is marketing a similar service which provides an application that allows users to send each other ringtones when they call, so a user calling another can decide what ringtone is heard at the other end. At the moment, it is uncertain whether these innovations will be successful or not.

So, at present, the future of ringtones is uncertain, they could continue to exist in the future, but sold and produced for virtually nothing, with the focus on creating and sharing. Or, alternatively, new innovations may continue to keep the market alive, just in another form such as full track music downloads or music clips to be played on the move.

Brief Write Up On WiFi

With the worlds technology booming so fast it was inevitable that the means of networking and connecting to the internet would become more advanced and way more convenient. Wired connections of networks and a means to connect to the internet have been here for quite some time and will still be around for a very long time. This is because it provides a relatively fast connection and a more secure connection than wireless. But if we look at the needs and wants of all consumers of internet, we all want convenience, and to be tied down to phone lines is not the answer to the problem. This is the very reason why wireless connection has come out.

However with convenience comes a big price; and that is none other than security. We all look for privacy and security. We all would like to think that we can be rest assured that our emails are not being read by others or that our online banking is safe and secure. This is not always the case; any computer connecting to the internet runs the risk of being hacked or hijacked. However this is just done more easily when using a wireless network or connecting to internet wirelessly.

It's like having a huge supermarket that has no walls just few security guards around the stock. It's clear that the stock of the supermarket can be stolen easily just by outsmarting the security or by moving around them so that you don't get caught.

Similarly; when using wi-fi, your packets of data is like the stock of the supermarket. Your packets of data is protected by an encryption; however, just the same as the guards being outsmarted so can this encryption be broken or cracked. Last, is the fact that your data is moving through the air, that is why it's called wireless; this is seen as the whole supermarket that has no walls.

The steps a hacker would take are very easily done and anyone with a computer is capable of doing it. There are three main steps.

The first step would be to look for your "supermarket". In other words, searching and picking up a connection in your range; this can be done by simply keeping your laptop on and walking or driving around till you find a network.

The second step would be to locate the "stock of the supermarket". In other words, sniffing through the air, using simple hacking programs, to find data packets.

Once these packets of data is located and sniffed for important data, then it's on to the final step. The final step would be to crack the password or encryption of the data that you have found. This can be easily done with another hackers program that allows a brute force attack on the encryption. This simply means that the program will try every possible combination to crack the password.

That's all it takes to hack another persons wi-fi to get important data or just to use the victims network so that the hacker has free internet. However, one may take simple steps to make ones data more secure and make the hackers job more harder to do and possibly stop him/her from even trying.

These steps may help

1) Use a good firewall and antivirus

2) Change the admin and users passwords

3) Keep you WEP or WPA encryption on

4) Turn the auto connect feature off (only connect when trusted!!)

5) Turn off WiFi off completely when not in use

6) Surf using a VPN (virtual private network)

These are just some steps to take to keep yourself a bit more secure. But the main thing to know is that "NOTHING IS HACK PROOF". If you can keep that in mind then you might understand the importance of security.

Business Text Software Means Success Is Just A Finger Click Away

Regardless of what size your business is, the single most important part of its success are your customers. You may have the best staff in your field, with the best management team to lead them, but without customers, how are you going to enjoy enough success to keep that team together? Thanks to mobile text advertising software, the answer may be easier than you think.

What Is Mobile Text Advertising Software?

Simply put, mobile text software is the next generation of advertising to both your existing customer base, and any potential new clients at the same time, using technology that everyone is familiar with. With the mobile phone industry playing such a crucial part in any business, you can see why a service such as mobile text advertising is virtually a no-brainer - after all, wouldn't any business like a potential client base of over 200 million contacts?

It's so easy to use as well, and the best part of all is that it's absolutely free - simply pay a one-off fee for the software itself, and there's no need to worry about individual text costs, different service provider charges, etc. All you need is for your company website to support the software we provide, and that's it - no hidden costs, no provider charges and no monthly administration costs. Just one simple payment for the software, and it's yours to use for life!

How Does Mobile Text Advertising Work?

Unlike many other online advertising campaigns, mobile text advertising is simplicity itself to set up and maintain. The software itself runs in conjunction with your product, so no matter what industry you're in, you'll always be ahead of the game when it comes to advertising to your customers, both new and old.

If you already have an email permission form on your website, you'll be familiar with how mobile text advertising works. When the software is installed on your site, every visitor will automatically be asked if they want to receive information about your products. However, the difference is that instead of that information going to an email account, where it could be ignored or filtered out with anti-spam software, the advertisement goes directly to that user's mobile phone.

Since everyone has their mobile phone on them at all times (especially businessmen for whom it's often the make-or-break tool in any sale), you're guaranteed that your message is getting read. And what better way to attract new sales or repeat business than an already receptive audience?

And since all the legwork is done by the automated software, you don't even have to worry about maintaining a database, leaving you to concentrate on making the best profits! Profits which are made even larger since there is no cost to send texts via mobile advertising, since it uses Web-to-mobilephone software.

Setting Mobile Text Advertising Up

One of the truly great features offered by mobile text advertising is the ease in which it can be set up, particularly if you're a small to medium sized business with little or no IT support teams. The software is already pre-programmed to be tailored to any website, and because of this, you don't even need to know how to programme - all you need to know is how to copy paste text onto your website, and you can be up and running within 30 minutes.

Couple this with full updates whenever mobile phone carriers have their own software updates, as well as the fact that you can change the text and advertising images to anything that you want to tell customers about, and you can see why mobile text advertising is the only way forward for your company.

What Do I Do Now?

Now that you know how it works, you can surely see the numerous benefits your company can expect when you purchase the mobile text advertising software. What you probably don't realise is how inexpensive it currently is to get it for your own company.

For the one-off payment of $39.99, not only will you get the software to install on your website, but you'll also receive a full digital user guide, to make sure you get the best possible results. Also included are four bonus pieces of software, from marketing tips and strategies to a full resource directory to show you how to maximise sales and follow-up advertising.

So, if you want to get ahead of your competitors, there's really no need to wait any longer - get started with mobile text advertising today, and watch your sales fly in.

Feminine Laptop Bags

Functionally chic women's laptop bags are hard to come by. One of my biggest complaints, and I've heard this from my friends too, is finding a women's laptop bag that's both feminine and functional. Most business women don't want to carry around a pink briefcase with flowers on it, or lug around a bag meant for a 6ft tall man. And why does it seem that most women's laptop cases don't have shoulder support? Men have so many cool options; they can go, techy or sophisticated, casual or urban. All they have to do is walk into a store and find a plethora of laptop bags to choose from.

I have gone on a search and found some pretty good options. My favorite is the bag by Hayden Harnett. It's not stiff like a lot of the laptop bags for women that I've seen, and it has a long adjustable shoulder strap.

MARC BY MARC JACOBS Lovely Behati Tote -$458

This supple leather tote is punctuated by bold, logo-etched rivets and soft pleating detail. Menswear-inspired pinstriped cotton twill lines the interior but still looks feminine. The top zip closure keeps your laptop and papers secure.

Celine Springbok Large Tote - $1,750

Yes, it's more than a bit spendy for a briefcase, but this bag screams luxury. Calf hair with smooth leather trim and an adjustable and removable flat leather shoulder strap with buckles, along with an interior leather-trimmed cell phone pocket, patch pocket, and zipped pocket are the perfect combination of opulence and function.

Hayden-Harnett Catalina Slouchy Laptop Brief - $473

Sony VAIO Laptop

The new Sony VAIO laptop, with its stunning features and charismatic characteristics have helped the model in invading the minds of users. VAIO, the acronym for Video Audio Integrated Operation, is a sub-brand for Sony, the electronic giant. The branding was done by Sony to distinguish items that encompassed the usage of consumer audio and video, as well as being conventional computing products. Sony was a big name in the Japanese computer market in the 1980s, but left the field in the end of the decade. Its re-entry to the computer market, this time globally, was in 1996 with a new brand name VAIO with the PCV series of desktops. The VAIO logo of the brand which became a big hit represents the integration of analog and digital technology. The 'VA' represents an analog wave and the 'IO' represents digital binary code.

Sony plans to expand the use of the VAIO label. Among its new products include notebooks, sub notebooks, desktops and a hard-disk-based audio player that comes in both 20GB and 40GB variations. The network media solutions by Sony will also carry the brand name VAIO. High-end Sony VAIO notebooks usually get shipped with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Business, while low-end laptops such as the N series come with Microsoft Vista Home Basic. VAIO computers come with components from Intel processors, Seagate technology or Fujitsu hard drives and Sony Speakers.

The recent models from Sony VAIO, such as the TX or SZ, have implemented the LED backlit XBRITE LCD, that further enhance the power saving and accurate color reproduction capability of the LCD unit. The VAIO SZ series features both an Intel GMA950 graphics chip and an NVIDIA graphics chip. The high-end AR Series VAIOs were the first models to incorporate a Blu-ray Disc burner. These laptops were designed to be the epitome of high-definition products including a 1080p capable WUXGA (1920 × 1200 pixels) screen, HDMI output and the aforementioned Blu-ray burner. The AR series also includes an illuminated logo below the screen.

How To Buy Cheap Laptops

If you prefer to buy a used notebook rather than a new one, then you should read my guide first. I understand if you need a cheap laptop because we always prefer something which is effective, right? Only game freaks want to buy expensive laptops. If you need a laptop for your job, obviously what you need is a cheap one. Fortunately, you can find cheap laptop easily in used notebooks store.

However, you must also remember that used laptops are not as good as new laptops. Sometimes you can see a damaged power cord inside the used laptop that you want to buy so you should see into the laptop first, whether it has a good power cord or not. After checking the power cord, you must test the keyboard, speakers, and mouse. If one of them is not working, you should find another used laptop.

Another suggestion for you, don't trust the seller. If you ask him/her about the condition of the laptop, he/she will try to convince you that everything is fine. Force the seller to test the laptop in front of you so you will know whether the laptop is completely fine or not. Don't forget to check the monitor and the battery because these two parts are two of the most important components in a notebook.

After you check everything, now you should look inside the hard disk. Find what softwares that the seller has already installed into his/her laptop. If there is no software at all (except the OS), you might want to bargain a little more. You must also compare the price with other used laptops in eBay or other sellers. Good luck.

Desktop Replacement Laptop Reviews, Analysis and Advices

As a greater portion of computer users are realizing the digital freedom that is available with Wi-Fi hot spots and go-anywhere internet, there has been an increasing trend toward mobile computing. As is always the case for serious users though, there is the question: desktop or laptop? It has long been true that the desktop machine market has had quite a lead on the mobile world as far as performance goes.

The ever present struggle was whether or not you could sacrifice the performance you want for the mobility you need. In the last few years though, chip manufacturers have progressed leaps and bounds in creating faster, smaller, cooler running and more power efficient chips; all at a fraction of the cost. Today's laptops are now able to achieve performance that is comparable to or even equal to many desktops. These desktop replacements allow their users to handle whatever their computing needs are, on the fly no less.

Here are some of the best desktop replacement solutions available currently:

HP Pavilion HDX

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100

o Display Size (inches): 20.1

o Wide Screen: Yes

o Total HD Size (GB): 240

o Min. Weight (lbs.): 15.5

o Price (at time of review): $3000

This desktop replacement is a real heavy hitter. The 20.1" screen allows you to stay productive without sacrificing mobility. Weighing in at 15.5 pounds, this monster belongs more on a desk than on your lap but it is still light enough to carry with you. This model also offers attractive extras such as a Blu-ray DVD player and full 1080p HD display.

Dell XPS M1730

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8300

o Display Size (inches): 17

o Wide Screen: Yes

o Total HD Size (GB): 160

o Min. Weight (lbs.): 10.6

o Price (at time of review): $2500

A little more on the medium range, the M1730 is well equipped for its price range, but not as big as the full blown Desktop replacements. This model also comes with the option of the NVIDIA Geforce 8800M SLI graphics card, which makes this a real contender in the gaming and video processing market.

Gateway P-172X FX

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8300

o Display Size (inches): 17

o Wide Screen: Yes

o Total HD Size (GB): 320

o Min. Weight (lbs.): 9.6

o Price (at time of review): $2000

Even though this is the cheapest and lightest desktop replacement of the bunch, it packs the meanest over-all punch. With 4 GB of RAM and the powerful Core 2 Duo chip (impressive 3MB L2 cache), this is one of the most well suited laptops for unplugging and taking on the road without losing your performance edge.

With so many choices to look at, desktop replacement shoppers will want to keep a few key things in mind before they head out to the store (or to their favorite internet dealer). Try to get an idea of the most weight you would be willing to carry around with you. A good bench mark is to realize that a gallon of water weighs 8.33 lbs so ask yourself if you will be willing to carry that much weight or more. Also remember that though these laptops come close to performing on par with many desktop models, they will not out perform most high end desktops, so think about the most demanding things you want to do with your desktop replacement and take into consideration whether it will be able to perform your required tasks.

Paying for power is never cheap but the benefits of mobility can be invaluable. Who knows what the near future holds for desktop replacements but for now, be assured that the technology you require is more than available and very affordable.

How to Save Money on Buying Laptops

Buying a laptop becomes quite a confusing affair with myriad choices and configurations available in the market. Unless you are aware of what features you want, you might end up spending more than what you want. There is no end to how much you can spend on cutting edge technology; you need to ascertain what is the best buy for you based on your budget and requirements. With a little bit of prior financial planning and research, you can get the most suitable laptop for your needs.

Start with a budget: How much can you realistically spend on a laptop without having to rely on external sources of funding like a personal loan or financing from the seller? Decide on a budget and stick to it, otherwise you might get swayed by the fancy features of laptops, many of which you might not even use that frequently. Don't stretch your finances just to get the latest technology when you cannot afford it comfortably.

Specify your requirements, prioritize what is important: Make a note of all your requirements based on whether you are going to use it at home or at work. Identify your priorities; are you going to use the computer mostly for email, or will you be building complex spreadsheets. Accordingly, you might invest less or more in the processing speed and spreadsheet packages. Match your budget to your needs and make a comparative study of the prices of comparable models with different sellers.

Size: Remember that notebooks often come at a higher price than laptops, because you end up paying a premium for the tiny size and weight. Analyze how often you will be traveling with your machine and if size is important for you or not.

Processors: Different processors, depending upon their speed and brands can dramatically change the price of a laptop. If you have prioritized what you will be using your machine for, you will be able to make the right choice that suits your budget. Generally speaking, the latest software and websites run faster and more efficiently on faster processors. So, if you do not want to update your machine at a later date, you might want to invest in a faster processor. Intel's Centrino offers great speed as well as greater battery life, but might cost more. Celeron processors are cheaper and ideal for entry level budget laptops. Choose wisely because you will not be able to upgrade the processor at a later date.

RAM: Opt for a minimum of 512 MB Ram if your budget is extremely limited. Otherwise 1GB or 2GB or more would be ideal for today's uses. Remember, if you don't want to spend too much today, this is one area where you can get an upgrade.

Battery life: For people who travel quite a lot, long battery life should be a main criterion. Go in for those that give a minimum of two hours per charge. Remember that your batter life will deteriorate over an extended period of time. Understand what the replacement cost of a battery will be, so that you can bring down the lifetime cost of owning a laptop.

Operating system: In today's world, you can get an open source operating system for which you do not have to pay anything. If, however, you choose to use Microsoft Windows, you will have to pay to buy the original software. Your operating system is one area where you can bring down the cost of ownership without compromising on quality if you are using your machine for basic needs such as email.

Hard Drive: Another area which drives the variability in the cost of a laptop is the amount of memory you choose for your hard drive. If you use your machine to store a lot of files like photographs and music, then you might want to buy a machine with a bigger hard drive. Of course if you have a limited financial budget, you can start with a basic hard drive and later get an external drive. The prices of such hard drives is coming down quite dramatically.

Wireless: The way the world is moving, you might want to get a laptop that has wi-fi compatibility. Getting wi-fi installed at a later date might not only be a hardware challenge but also might come at a huge cost. So, minimize this cost by getting wi-fi upfront.

Warranty: Many laptops will come with a factory guarantee - check the warranty period and scope of coverage. Does the warranty cover both the cost of replacement parts and the labor charges? Check if it is onsite warranty or a carry-in warranty. Also check if there are options for extended warranty and insurance and how beneficial will it be. Read the fine print and also go through the replacement policies.

Things to remember

Start with a budget and ensure that you can afford your machine Prioritize the features like size and speed based on the activities you will be most using the laptop for email, word processing or spreadsheets You can save money by getting an open source operating system Understand the warranty and maintenance issues - clarify what you might have to pay for

Looking For the Best College Laptop

When you're buying the best college laptop, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. I've experienced using both a Mac and a PC/Windows and each of them have their positive qualities as well as their negative.

When I need to do my writing or working with spreadsheets, I prefer to be on a PC/Windows. I grew up with DOS then switched to Microsoft/Windows. I know the programs like the back of my hand and I complete my work rather quickly.

A Mac was introduced to me when I needed better streaming video and graphic abilities. I see a Mac being more of the what the future needs. Mac also makes it quicker to operate with less keystrokes.

As you shop for a laptop for college this year, remember to tell the salesman exactly what your needs are. Yes, you'll need to work with a word program and would want to have a better media player, but you can save money by cutting back on what you really won't need. Do you need to have a CD/DVD burner? If you don't, talk to the salesman about installing the basic CD/DVD and then put the money you saved toward boosting up your GIG's. Don't want those extra programs? You know, the ones that are never used once you get the computer home. Talk to them about how you can swap it for more RAM. Those are just a few of the different ways to build the best college laptop for yourself. Nobody but you is really going to use it (which is what you should do anyway). So why not have it the way you need it to be.

So, what really is the best college laptop? The one that was made for you and your needs, not one off the "showroom floor."

What to Consider When Choosing a Laptop

The introduction of the laptop has transformed our potential for mobile working. There are many manufacturers making many different models of laptop. Because of this, it is important to have a good understand of your requirements.

One of the main features which a buyer should look upon is the screen size. If you are used to large monitors and are going for an entertainment packed laptop for movies and gaming, the larger screen size becomes a necessity. The regular size available today is 15'' but giants like dell and Compaq even offer 19''. Laptops are also available with widescreen.

The processor is one of the most important parts of the laptop. The major companies in processor production, Intel and AMD offer from single core to dual cores. These days even core2 duo and quad cores are available. So choose the processor according to your needs and budget.

The size of the RAM can have an effect of the speed and number of concurrent applications that can be run at once. Because of this, it is important to get as much RAM as you can afford. Most laptops come with at least 1GB - 2GB which is sufficient for general usage.

Hard disk space varies from around 150GB to over 300GB. If you are going to be storing a lots of movies, music and photos, it would be worth considering something closer to 300GB. Will you be taking the laptop on meetings and trips or will it just be used at home. This should be taken into account so that you can consider the weight of the laptop that you will choose.

Make sure that the laptop has sufficient expansion slots. At least 3 USB ports will be extremely useful as they are used to connect to external devices such as mp3 players and cameras. In built Wi-Fi support is also worth considering to enable you to connect to wireless networks. It is also worth paying the extra for a battery with a larger capacity. This will benefit you when you are not close to an electricity mains.
